Maca root powder is an incredibly rich source of vitamins and minerals. 100 g off maca powder consists of calcium- 250 mg, iron- 14.8 mg, potassium-2000 mg, sodium-7.9 mg, copper-6mg and manganese- 0.8 mg. Much of these minerals are integral part of maca nutrition which plays a role as co-factors for the enzymes in the metabolic functions.

Maca, also called Ginseng Andin, Peruvian Ginseng, Lepidium meyenii, or Lepidium peruvianum, is a relative of radish and smells similar to butterscotch. 

 Maca is a cruciferous vegetable related to broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale. Maca is native to the high plateaus of the Peruvian Andes mountain range. Maca root, being a member of broccoli family vegetables, does not cause many toxic problems if consumed in moderate quantities. 

In fact, Andean people have cultivated maca for more than 2,000 years. It’s one of the few edible plants that can survive the harsh weather conditions above 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) in the Peruvian Andes. Traditionally, the Andean people used maca as a food, consuming it in a fermented drink or porridge. Additionally, the Andean people used maca as a natural medicine to treat various health conditions, such as respiratory conditions and rheumatic disease. 

 The demand for maca products has grown in recent years, likely because of claims that the plant can promote libido and fertility.
Because of the rise in worldwide demand for maca, people have begun to mass-produce this plant in other parts of the world, including the mountainous Yunnan province in China. 

Note: 

Consumption of maca root has not been established to treat thyroid dysfunctions. On the contrary, being a brassica family vegetable, maca contains goitrogens, and may, in fact, may worsen hypothyroidism and should be consulted with physicians before using maca supplements.
